In olden times, it was believed that the images of animals and birds were magical and lent their energy and spirit to the articles they adorned. The earlier artists wove their animal and bird images into their sword hilts, carts, door posts. Van Berkom notes, "I worked on drawings based on the twisting, mystical shapes of their birds and animals and reinterpreted them for the flat surfaces of my canvas and paper. As they became fleshed out, I began to see the magic emerge here, too."

Each of the limited edition prints has been entirely handmade by the artist. The final printing, also hand done, was printed by the artist and a printer of limited edition silk screen works.
